In 1996, GLOBE TELECOM, a joint venture of the Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecom International, became the first Telecommunication Company to offer Internet services in the Philippines. It started as a support service for clients who wanted to be connected at that time to the not-so-heard about Internet. Even during the Internet's youngest stage, Globe Telecom had the capability to offer dial-up access for residential customers subscribing to our telephone services; and dedicated access services to a few corporate customers who wished to connect their office network to the Internet. In the ensuing years, the local Internet scene boomed as technology became cheaper and more powerful. Internet access is moving from a luxury item to a necessity. Together with this growth, Globe Telecom continued to keep abreast with the increasing needs of Internet users. Through the continuous upgrade of its Internet facilities, Globe Telecom transformed its Internet access services into a full-blown business dedicated entirely to serve the Internet community in the Philippines.Today, two major service categories emerged, Globe Net - the service that focuses on providing dial-up and dedicated access to both corporate and residential subscribers - and the Globe Internet Exchange or GIX - which provides wholesale access services for Internet Service Providers. |
